Dr. Kintzer was a great man. He saved my life. I'm so very sorry to hear this.

Alan had such positive energy.  It's hard to accept that he is gone. I miss him, and I miss connecting to our NYU community through him. I send my condolences to his family.  You were such an important part of his life.

I chatted with Alan at family occasions where we had mutual connections. He was a pleasure to talk with - we both loved psychology and conversation with him was enriching and uplifting.  He was warm and genuine.  Smart and informed.  I can imagine he was a wonderful healer, comfort and inspiration to his clients. So sorry to hear of his passing. We met Alan and the family the night before Jake and Emily's wedding and it was as if I had known him all my life...a real friendship was created. He was fun, engaging, entertaining and had a great knowledge of the Geordie language and traditions.

All of my memories of Alan are ebullient and filled with joy. From basements hangs on the floof, to the hilarious "candle lighting ceremony" at my Bar Mitzvah, to his absolute domination of the dance floor at our wedding (we're still looking for the video, we'll find it!). But what I will always remember most about Alan is his voice. Deep and calm, filled with wisdom and warmth and humor, Alan's voice was a comfort to his family and friends and patients hundreds of thousands of times over throughout his blessed and amazing life. I hope the memories of his voice bring you some measure of comfort in your grief. Jessica and Lucy and I send our love and condolences to you all.

Sending my warmest condolences to Alan's close & wide network of friends, patients, colleagues, family. So very many of us whom he touched with his warmth, spark, humor, recognition, and yes, hugs. I was touched by his intuition and perception from the first time I met Alan, and am grateful for the all too limited time in which we connected. What a gift, and now loss, to the psychoanalytic community that we shared. Sincere sympathy to all who share in grieving at this time, knowing his memory will light many lives to come!

I am still reeling at the idea of a world, especially a psychoanalytic one, that doesn't include Alan.
We began in the same Postdoc class in the 1990's. He was always such a welcoming presence, with his beaming smile and warm greeting. 
As we moved through the program, whenever I saw him, I knew he remembered our beginning and he valued me. This, in an institute that was not always the most comfortable or inclusive, for me.
I will always remember we began this journey together and it makes me so very sad that his has ended. 
I think of all of his family who I know misses him indescribably.

We wanted to express our deepest condolences to Sara and Alan's and Sara's beautiful and gifted daughters and to Sam.  We met Alan briefly and in those brief moments, we could feel his love and for the love those around him had  for him.  He raised strong and loving daughters who help others the way he did.  From reading all of the posts, Alan leaves a remarkably profound legacy like none other .  The lives, marriages and unions he has positively affected by teaching love and understanding is insurmountable .  What a wonderful mark he has left.  Clearly he lived and loved life to the fullest.  And when we paid a shiva call,  the house was full and swelling with loved ones continuously entering .  We are so happy that we have gotten to and will continue to get to know Alan through our dear friend Sam, who like Alan, is a special human being. Alan was always a delight.  His warmth and humor as well as deep
professionalism were marvelous to participate with.  He always

In my mind’s eye, I’ll always remember Alan in the sun, on the beach, feet in the sand, with a huge grin on his face. This man knew how to live and knew how to share life with others. He was a love-machine. No one ever exuded as much affection in one lifetime. His hugs, doubling as chiropractic adjustments, are legendary. He leaves a massive hole in the world he’s left. I will miss you so much, friend. 
PS: I’m so happy his patients are posting here. He really loved his patients and would welcome them to the community who mourn him. 

My Cousin Alan. 

Alan opened his home to me. Not once, but many times over many years. Alan, Sara, Emily and Molly really made me and my mother Honora feel both welcome and appreciated during the holidays. They were the nearest family to me for most of my life (about a 2 hour drive away over 30 years), and I did my best to make every event I was invited to. 

Alan made sure his house was a place of joy and laughter and caring. Watching him and Sam joking together even as they tried to remain serious was always entertaining and uplifting, to say the least. Alan’s parents Roz and Hy were also there then, and will always be two of the sweetest people you could ever meet. Anyone could see how incredibly proud they were of him and all he managed to accomplish. 

It makes me very happy to know that he brought his sense of humor into his work as well. Reading the condolences of others it doesn’t surprise me at all to see there were people he mentored and inspired, whether during his career or just those in his personal circle. I’m honored and grateful to have been a part of his world, his family and his influence. I grieve for his family and everyone else who feels this powerful sense of loss. Alan is neither gone nor forgotten; hopefully he lives on in the hearts and minds of everyone he touched.

Alan has been my therapist for four years. In our time together, he exuded such warmth and compassion while helping me navigate everything that life brought my way. Always supportive (and ready with a Jackie Mason quote!), Alan truly made a difference. While I am truly saddened, I am grateful for our time together. My sincere condolences to all. 

Alan and I became Scrabble friends on ‘Scrabble Go’  app over 3 years ago. I became concerned when he missed several days of play and looked for answers which I sadly found. We conversed a little - good natured ribbing and false bravado. We shared a few stories very occasionally but mostly it was lighthearted competition making up words. I always played Alan’s games on my list first. I suspect there are others who are missing his plays. This is such sad news and I will miss his humour and kindness terribly. We played 494 enjoyable games and it was less about winning and more about the word finesse of either of our plays, which would elicit compliments and encouragement. He played under the name Worddha in ‘Scrabble Go’ app.  Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Alan was my therapist for over a decade. I cannot express how shocked and deeply saddened I am by his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. Alan was instrumental in helping me through some difficult times past and present. I am a stronger person today because of his care and thoughtfulness and while I will miss his guidance,  it will stay with me forever.  Thank you Alan, for everything.  God Bless. 

Dr. Kintzer has been my therapist for the last four years, and I am deeply saddened by the news of his passing. He was a tremendous source of comfort for me as a dependable, warm, funny and insightful man. I still cannot believe he is no longer here, but I feel so fortunate to have known him. There is no doubt: I am a much better person because of Dr. Kintzer. He has inspired me and I credit him for my decision to choose the same career. His voice will live on within me, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. 

Alan is and was my supervisor. We first met in 2010 when I was taking the introductory course at the Mitchell Center. I was a very green clinician at a substance abuse clinic, and that course was instrumental to my to thinking much more deeply and analytically about the work I was doing. Alan was what I affectionately referred to as one of my homeroom teachers. One of my salient memories of Alan was a moment in which I disclosed that I had been accepted to Adelphi's PhD program. Already viewing him as a mentor, his validation and encouragement meant so much to me. He went on to become one of my supervisors during my doctoral training, and then again in 2020 I asked whether he would consider supervising me in my private practice. The pandemic had begun some months before, I was on maternity leave, my father had just passed, and I had relocated from New York to Florida. Everyone has their own pandemic story and this is the rough sketch of mine. I knew I needed supervision to aid in resuming my practice & Alan immediately came to mind. I felt that I could share with him all that I had been through, that he would approach my mess with tenderness, support, and insight. He did not disappoint. For the last 3 years, Alan helped me think about my patients and my relationships with them, all the while supporting me as the work at times inevitably evoked difficult and painful feelings within me. Alan was insightful, wise and equally warm & genuinely caring.  He was a truly wonderful supervisor, one that cannot be replaced. He will live on in my work as a therapist - and perhaps someday as a supervisor - for as long as I continue to practice. Thank you, Alan, for gracing me with your very special presence. I miss you & know that there are many, many others whose lives you've touched. My deepest condolences to his nearest and dearest.

Dearest Sara-Jane, Emily and Molly,.
       Our deepest condolences to you and the girls -- we are absolutely heartbroken and cannot fathom the depths of your pain at this almost inconceivable loss. We have so many wonderful memories of Alan --- from the day of your wedding when I fell off that chair and stopped the rabbi in his tracks to those wonderful Connecticut Christmases when Alan would leave the adults and round up all the toddlers with your two among them -- and wind up on the floor in one of the bedrooms entertaining them with stories and games! And we'll never forget how he held up Doug's cellphone at our wedding so that Doug's mother and sister could listen in from North Carolina and not miss the joyous occasion they couldn't physically attend! 
       I culled these few photos taken that day in August of 2015 to share with you because they are among the happiest memories we have of time spent with both you and Alan but in particular, I will always remember the huge bear hug he always had for me as well as for Doug not just that day in particular -- but every time we got together! He was a wonderful human being, friend to so many,an amazing father not to mention an absolutely incredible son and son-in-law! He will live on forever in the memories of all those who were blessed to have known him! Our only regret and we feel absolutely horrible is that we will be on a plane enroute to Miami from  Amsterdam at the time of your memorial service on June 4th. If not for that there is no way we would not have been there and spoken at his memorial. May his memory be a blessing to you today and every day, Take comfort knowing he's resting with his parents and yours in eternal peace in G-d's presence!

What did I love about him??

My sorrow over losing my dear cousin, Alan, is very great. My heart is with Sara and his daughters. I'll cherish memories of the laughter we shared, the deep caring he conveyed and his keen mind and wit.


I remember Alan with warmth and love.  As a socially shy person, Alan was a wonderful antidote.  He pulled me and everyone within reach toward his laughter, kindness and enthusiasm for life.  What and who he loved, he intensely loved:  his family, friends, Postdoc.  I loved dancing with him and his seemingly boundless energy.  So much of that joy will linger in anyone who knew him.

I was Alan's student at the Mitchell Center in 2016-17, and this is the photo that we took of him and his co-director Debbie at our final day of school. What a delight he was to learn from and with! 

I was Alan's supervisee from that time and my clinical work will always be deeply influenced by his thoughtfulness, his generosity with people and his capacity to hold human complexity with such sweetness and care. He was especially generous to me as a new parent and offered so many of his own insights that will affect my family forever. 

I miss Alan deeply and have many open conversational threads that I regret we won't get to finish — and I know there are so many of us who are better for having gotten to know him.

My deepest condolences to the Kintzer Family.  
The memory of Alan will always be as a kind, caring and funny colleague.  He worked with our graduate students at the St. John's University Center for Psychological Services.  His contributions to the development of future clinical psychologists will continue to be a valuable asset to their profession.  He imparted a great deal of wisdom and growth for every supervisee who was lucky enough to learn from him. 
Alan always made my day more pleasant the moment he entered the Center.  He loved talking about his wife and girls, and we shared many stories.  His amazing smile will live on in my mind and heart.

We are grieving the loss of Alan Kintzer. He was a highly respected therapist in Kenwood Psychological Services since 1985, nearly 38 years, beginning when he was 36 years old. He was an outstanding psychologist and an outstanding person. We will miss him terribly.

Dr. Kitzner.  Alan was our therapist for almost ten years. Alan was always the voice of reason and balance in our lives . 

Each week we would meet, most recently on Zoom, to basically step back from our stressful world. You see Jessica and I are not only married for many years but we also work together. …..

It was through our weekly sessions as a couple and periodically as individuals that we received the support and masterful insight to make it for another week. 

Alan was warm, funny, supportive and so very important in our lives. We were scheduled again for this coming week. …there will not only be a hole in our schedule but also in our hearts. He will be missed.

Our condolences to his family and to the many colleagues who also mourn this great loss.



Dr. Kintzer was one of a kind. He was the glue in my marriage. He was there to teach us to be kind, put yourself in the others shoes and to just give a hug. He always “checked” in on my better half or when needed would ask me “where are you with this”. The last thing he saw in our session was our daughter. He gets the credit for making me a better man. I hope he’s in heaven smiling down on us. To his family-thank you for sharing him with us. We are better people today having been guided by Dr. Kintzer. I will miss you. 

I am so saddened by this great loss. Alan Kintzer was my therapist for more than a decade.  He taught me how to be a braver and more loving person with his kindness, humor, integrity,  and wisdom.  My husband and I were blessed to have his guidance and love. We will miss him tremendously. My most sincere condolences to his family.
