Anita Sternberg Liebowitz

February 27, 1924 – June 17, 2026

Anita Sternberg Liebowitz, 102, passed away peacefully in her own home on June 17, 2026 from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease, which she bravely fought for 22 years with the support of her family, friends and wonderful caregivers. Born to Dr. Louis and Henriette Sternberg and raised in Manhattan, she later moved to the East Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn and attended Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights. From the age of five, she wanted to study medicine. She majored in Chemistry at Mount Holyoke College, where she graduated in 1945. One of the rare women admitted to medical school in those days, she graduated from New York University’s College of Medicine in 1949. At NYU, she met Dr. Hirsch Robert Liebowitz who taught there and married him in September of 1948. She interned at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and later became an allergist like her father. While maintaining a part-time practice as she raised her three daughters, she volunteered with immunization programs of the March of Dimes, especially against the major outbreaks of Rubella. Her commitment to medicine also included strong financial support for Hadassah Hospital and CARIH, the Children’s Asthmatic Research Institute and Home, in Denver, where she lectured. She loved classical music, especially opera, travel, and poetry. Anita is survived by her three daughters, Merrie Liebowitz Behar (Edward), Janice Liebowitz (Andy Schoenholtz), and Robin Liebowitz; her three grandsons, Ari Schoenholtz (Mollie Lam), David Schoenholtz, and Noah Schoenholtz; and her two great-grandchildren, Eliza and Teddy. Shiva will be observed June 21 and 22, 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm, with minyan at 8 pm at Anita’s home, as well as on June 25 at the same times above at Janice and Andy’s home in Bethesda, Maryland.
