Carol Schreiber, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on February 28th, 2025. A beautiful, charming woman who loved the intricacies of life, she finally succumbed to Alzheimer’s at 101 years. She is survived by her daughters Merrill and Catherine, sons-in-law, Mel Schneiderman and Miles Ruthberg, grandchildren Elyse, Robyn, Stephanie, and Jeremy, and great-grandchildren Daniel, Wyatt, Asher, and Mia Rose.
Born in Brooklyn, Carol lived in Bayside, Queens, but spent most of her life in Great Neck. She adored her immediate and extended family, was devoted to her brother, Norman, and was a cherished friend to many. She was a great listener and was always happy to give advice. She and her husband of 58 years, Dr. Walter Schreiber, were Bridge Life Masters. They enjoyed dancing and playing tennis. Carol played tennis until she was 80 and was still dancing at 95. She loved music and played piano throughout her life. She enjoyed talking to strangers and made new friends wherever she went.
A great hostess, she loved entertaining. A graduate of Cornell University, she never stopped learning and was never too old to try something new. She was a sculptor, painter, and a reciter of poetry committed to memory.
Carol was keen on exposing her children to the rewards of a cultured life. Merrill and Catherine had art, music, and dance lessons and were taught to appreciate classical music and theatre. She made sure she and Walter attended all the children’s performances. She was a dedicated grandmother. She drove Elyse and Robyn from school and to activities. Carol was there when needed for family and friends.
She and Walter instilled within their children a love of Judaism and its traditions. When 9/11 happened and few dared to travel, Carol and Walter made it to Los Angeles for Stephanie's Bat Mitzvah.
Carol supported Walter as the young dentist made a place for himself in Brooklyn and then Queens. Later in life, she worked as his Office Manager.
Carol will be remembered for her sparkling personality, curious nature, devotion to family and friends, keen intelligence, and the “spirit of fun” she created for all.
A funeral service for Carol will be held Sunday, March 2, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM at Riverside-Nassau North Chapels, 55 North Station Plaza, Great Neck, NY 11021. Following the funeral service will be a committal service from 11:15 AM to 11:45 AM at Mount Ararat Cemetery, 1165 NY-109, Lindenhurst, NY 11757.
