

A Roslyn resident passed away peacefully on June 3rd in New Hyde Park, New York after a long illness. He was 69. Born on June 9th, 1955, to Dean and Esther Powell in San Francisco, California. He moved to Queens, New York at age 3. Later his family moved to Greenlawn, Long Island where he spent most of his childhood.
Dean attended Buffalo State College and Rochester Institute of Technology where he studied Photography. In 1978 he moved to New York City where he began his
career as a Commercial Photographer. Starting out as an Assistant to well-known Master Photographer Tosh Matsumoto and many others he honed his photography lighting skills.
After a few years he went out on his own starting Dean Powell Photography Inc. and opened his New York City photo studio in 1983. With his talent and natural way with people he amassed a long client list ranging from Advertising and Magazines to Corporate Bank companies. His client list included Estée Lauder, REVLON, Mac Cosmetics, Family Circle, Fitness, Outdoor Life and Sesame Street Magazines.
Following his Commercial Photography career Dean went on to shoot for the Fadeyev Ballet Company, corporate parties and private event photography.
Dean Powell was the Photographer for his wife Michele’s Halloween company, Costume Culture by Franco, prior to that Franco American Novelty Company, starting in 1984 until his illness in 2024.
Dean is survived by his wife Michele, his daughters Chelsea, Taylor and son-in-law Max. His brothers Richard, Kenneth, David and sister-in-law Cynthia Jo.
Dean’s love of life and his artistic vision serve as an inspiration to all that knew and loved him.
