I think of Bobby often and also wonder how you're doing. I regret not having reached out to you in person after Bobby's passing, other than leaving my condolences and  memories in this space. I hope you and yours are doing well.

How could it be 2 years already? It seems like just yesterday when I'd come to  your door, Bobby, always greeted by a smile, then a smirk "You look just like Aaron"  (my father). I'm thinking of you and also send my heartfelt thoughts to you, dear Noelle.

Most folks who didn't know better would think that Bob was merely my
favorite professor.  In truth, aside from my father, I loved no man more
than I loved Bob.

Yes, he was my favorite professor, but he was also my role model.
Bob earned his doctorate from Columbia University, so I did the 
same. Bob wrote a wonderful book. I did my best and turned out a successful "evergreen." Bob earned a stellar reputation as a consultant
to industry. I followed in his footsteps in this regard, too. And when my lecturing/consulting practice expanded to cover all habitable continents,
Bob took great pleasure in my success, generous spirit that he was.
I could go on and on in this manner, but I think you've got the drift.

Bob and I stayed in touch by telephone regularly, over the course of
40 years.  In fact, we had a nice, leisurely conversation only a week before he left us ... too soon, of course.

What was my favorite meeting with Bob? This may surprise you, Noelle, but that was Sabbath dinner with you and Bob at your home. Nothing pretentious, but your wonderful hospitality and the warm feelings that seemed to increase geometrically with every passing moment.

Bob was God's valentine to the world.
I feel superlatively blessed to have crossed paths with him.
And, of course, to you, Noelle, 
and to the rest of your beautiful blended family, 
I offer my most sincere and profound of condolences.

As Bobby's cousin 15 years younger I always looked up to him  as an elder (who loved pistachio nuts).  Some early memories include his generous gift of savings bonds to me and my twin brother Dave for our Bar Mitzvah, and years later visiting him and Reba in NY after my college graduation and getting a tour of his Columbia  Univ. carrel where he was finishing up his Ph.D. This was one of the experiences that led me to get my own Ph.D. years later. We grew apart over the years due to political differences: he became a wealthy, staunch conservative who admired business success (he once aspired to be CEO of GM) while I rejected that world and those values.  When we saw each other, Bobby would always tease me about my unrealistic "liberal" views and so I tended to avoided these encounters.

Only more recently, during what became annual visits with Bobby and Noelle in Florida, did I come to fully appreciate Bobby's profound love for family. This was far more important to him than his wealth or status or opinions, or our differences in politics and lifestyle. His devotion to  family above all else was made very clear in the handwritten autobiographical sketch Bobby shared with me a few years ago. The memoir describes his painful early life and explains for me  why he so loved and idolized my father Aaron, with whom my siblings and I had a difficult time when growing up.  For one thing, my father shared Bobby's  dreams of business success (in his case, never realized).  But more importantly, my father was at the bedside of his older sister Anna, Bobby's mother, throughout her terrible ordeal with terminal cancer, which left Bobby to a painfully adrift childhood. 

I now understand, sadly too late,  how devoted and beloved Bobby was  to  the generations of loved ones in his remarkable blended family, and also how much he connected me to my own early life and family.  His sudden death is an unexpectedly profound loss for me  and I grieve for Noelle and the family.






 I am so sorry to hear about Bobby.  I have good memories of our early years spent at family picnics and holidays.  Tom and I send condolences to you all.

Bobby was my cousin; my dad Aaron was his mom's brother. My wife Helen and i send condolences and best wishes to Bobby's family. I'll look for some early years photos.
