On the afternoon of June 13, 2020, Jill Patricia Karpel Lynn died peacefully at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York surrounded by her husband Robert, daughter Elizabeth, sister Wendy, and members of her immediate family, due to complications from colon cancer. She was 71 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, New York to Stanley and Dorothy Karpel on August 26, 1949, she moved with her family at an early age to Massapequa, New York where she attended Berner High School. Jill then attended New York University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She pursued her life-long dream of medicine, graduating from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in 1975, where she had been elected to the exclusive Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where she completed a residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in pulmonary diseases. She met her future husband, Robert Lynn, during her 3rd year of residency in the summer of 1977, whom she married on January 12, 1980. Following 3 years in private practice in Hartford, Connecticut, the couple moved to Great Neck, New York. Jill took an academic position at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York, and was based at Montefiore Hospital for 22 years. During her time there she became a mainstay of the teaching program for both the internal medicine and respiratory disease programs. As a result, many of the pulmonologists on Long Island were trained by Dr. Karpel. She developed an international reputation for her research in asthma, and was actively sought out as a speaker both domestically and abroad. By 2005, Jill had been promoted to Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and relocated to North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, New York. In 2010 she entered private practice with a former student of hers, Dr. Sanford Radner, and Dr. Joseph Genovese at North Shore Medical Arts in Great Neck, NY. She stopped working in March, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jill had a life-long passion for music, and she played both piano and guitar. She had a talent for photography, and a love of canines, in particular English Cocker Spaniels. By combining these interests along with her quick wit and good sense of humor, she turned her dogs Brock and Callie into Instagram stars.
Jill is predeceased by her parents Stanley and Dorothy Karpel. She is survived by her husband Robert Lynn, her daughter Elizabeth Lynn, her sister Wendy (Karpel) Kreitzman, nieces Susan, Emily, Nina, nephew Michael, and grand nieces and nephews Dani, Nate, Ella, Drew, Jack, and Michael. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memoriam to the American Lung Association (ALA) or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
