Congressman Wolff's district included northeastern Queens County and part of western Nassau County.  That was not my district, but it did make him a local VIP.
     Congressman Wolff was a member of Civil Air Patrol!  I've been a CAP member since 1955 when I joined as a Cadet and was very impressed by the fact that an important office-holder like Congressman Wolff also chose to join CAP.   It is a great organization both for teens and for adults.
     But, the real reason he became a personal hero to me was something he said during the Vietnam War.  He said that, if the only reason to remain was as a bargaining chip to protect American POWs, we could leave and could always go back if necessary!  Congressman Wolff was the only VIP who said anything about the issue that made any sense!

Dear Bruce, Diane & family, I can only imagine Lester & Dr. Davison sharing an enthusiastic greeting, followed by their usual robust conversation! I treasure the memories I have of sharing in Lester’s company, whether at an elegant dinner or a local parade! He was an intelligent, interesting and a kind & loving gentleman.  It was a privilege to know him & to spend time with you, his beloved family. You are in my thoughts & heart! Lindsey Davison

Please accept my sincere condolences at the death of former Congressman Lester Lionel Wolff.

I had the joy of interviewing him for an AARP feature when he was 100 years old.

I'll never forget him. Every time I am tempted to smear cream cheese on my bagel, I think of him.

I appreciate his service with the Civil Air Patrol and the Congress.

Dear Bruce and family

Sharing in your sense of loss but knowing your dad lived such a full life and that he bore witness to his children, grandchildren and even great grandchild in his lifetime let alone his accomplishments on life’s larger stage.
Bruce-you and I have shared memories of our youth in Great Neck -with Lester Wolff -our Congressman!  Your dad and my mom both lived to 102-my mom passed away November 24, 2020 and is buried at Wellwood Cemetery where I was just months ago.  But how lucky we were to have them with us so long!
Your dad’s political savvy and social commitments left a legacy carried on by his children and grandchildren .  So much to be proud of.
We reach out to one another at a time of loss and yet with words we honor the memories 
not just the sadness.  Affirming a meaningful connection from our youth I send you  my condolences on the death of your dad.

Lester Wolff was the first congressman I worked to help elect, before I could vote, in 1964.  I was so happy and proud when he won.  His victory helped end Republican/Conservative domination of politics on Long Island.  Got to meet him on a Zoom program last year, though never alas in person. Deep condolences to his family. But he did lead a very long life, didn't he...
