The family and friends of Louis Katz are deeply saddened by his passing on April 28, 2013 (one month before his 99th Birthday). He was a caring, devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father and friend always available for advice and assistance. He was born in a tenement on the Lower East Side and attended Cheder before starting Kindergarten. By First Grade, he could already read and write Hebrew and Yiddish. At 6, he was helping his Russian immigrant aunt learn English. At 12, he started working in the fur district and worked his way through Stuyvesant High School and St. John’s University and Law School. A World War II combat veteran (32nd Division, Red Arrow Army), he saw action in New Guinea, Indonesia and the Philippines. After the War, he and his wife Dotty (z”l) made their home in Brooklyn, among their close-knit, extended family. He retired from the main Post Office in Brooklyn in 1975 where he served as Timekeeper for his entire Division. He was very active in his Union, and in fraternal, educational and civic organizations. In retirement, he became Treasurer of the 2,000 member Brooklyn Chapter of NARFE and went on to program and moderate lecture/discussion programs for his synagogue. A modest man, he never discussed his accomplishments, or the countless people whose lives were positively changed through his advice and counsel. He is survived by his daughter, Toby. His presence will be truly missed.
