Louis Lee Marcus, or rather, as everyone knew him, Lee Marcus, a dedicated educator and beloved mentor, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, at Long Island Jewish Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 86.
Born on February 3, 1940, Lee's passion for history and education shaped a remarkable career. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History (1961) and a Master's in History (1963) from Adelphi University, followed by a Master's in Education (1970) and a Professional Diploma in Individualized Instruction (1972) from St. John’s University. He later pursued doctoral studies in Secondary Education at St. John’s.
After serving in the United States Army Reserves, Mr. Marcus began his teaching career in 1962 at Alva T. Stanforth Junior High School. In 1970, he transferred to Elmont Memorial High School, where he taught social studies, coached numerous sports, and advised many clubs.
Lee’s most profound legacy lies in his pioneering work with Model United Nations. He founded and advised the Elmont Memorial High School Model UN Program (1978-1995), established the Sewanhaka Intra-District Model United Nations Conference (SIDMUN) in 1992, and even brought Model UN to Elmont Union Free District Elementary Schools in 2005. Under his guidance, Elmont Memorial delegations achieved international acclaim, earning "Best Delegation" at The Hague in 1983 and "Outstanding Delegation" in 1992, solidifying the Sewanhaka School District's reputation as a global leader in Model UN.
Throughout his distinguished career, Lee received numerous accolades, including the Phoebe Apperson Hearst "National Educator of the Year Award" nomination (1991), "Teacher of the Year" for the Sewanhaka Central High School District (1992), and "Outstanding Social Studies Teacher" by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies (1993). In 1998, he was named a Charter Member of the New York State Academy of Teaching and Learning and received the "Outstanding Social Studies Supervisor of the Year" award.
In 1994, Lee Marcus became the Social Studies Chairperson at New Hyde Park Memorial High School and the District Coordinator of Social Studies for the Sewanhaka Central High School District. His contributions were recognized with proclamations and citations from New York State Senator Michael J. Tully, Nassau County Legislator Carrie Solages, and New York State Assemblyman Edward P. Ra, among others. He also received the Presidential Leadership Award from the Long Island Council for the Social Studies.
Lee Marcus's unwavering dedication and commitment to his students and the Model United Nations program were legendary. His impact on countless lives in the Sewanhaka School District will be remembered forever.
He is survived by his sister, Rhandy Turner, his nieces/great niece and nephews Barrie Herman, Alex Herman, Lannie Mathews, Mitchell Mathews, and Inara Mathews.
