Marvin Chatinover passed peacefully while cared for at Good Shepherd Hospice, shortly after his 99th birthday. Marvin was married for 75 years to his beloved, Miriam Ruth (Kleinberg) and leaves his three children Steven (Leah), Abbe Miller (Warren), and Jonathan (Elizabeth); nine grandchildren [Levi (Elisa), Jacob (Julia), Nadav, Michelle Miller Peil (Josh), Leigh (Andrew), Claire, Keith, Scott , Jason; and three great-grandchildren (Caleb, Iris, Liba).
Born in Los Angeles, Marvin came east for his BA in American History at Yale University, graduating in 1949 after serving his country in the US Navy for 2 years during WWII. Marvin was an avid debater and won the prestigious White Memorial trophy for debating, which was presented to him by Eleanor Roosevelt. He earned two MA’s (Journalism- UCLA; MBA from NYU), loved travel, especially to Canada and England, good restaurants, good theater, good movies, and a good laugh. Marvin was always well dressed, and he leaves a unique eclectic home library that spans just about every room of their house on Avalon Road.
Marvin began his career as a journalist for the Wall Street Journal. From there he worked as a financial writer and editor for Forbes Magazine, and the New York Stock Exchange. One of his highlights was participating in the annual Financial Writer’s Follies – a tongue n’ cheek parody on the industry, which was also a foreshadowing of his next career move. Marvin left the business world to pursue his passion for acting, and went on to appear in numerous movies, theater productions, commercials, and had a reoccurring role as ‘Dr. Jerome’ on the TV series “Ed” for four seasons.
Marvin lived in Great Neck for 68 years with Miriam and saw his three children off to universities of good standing. Pre-deceased by his beloved cat “Morris”, he and Miriam enjoyed fine dining, theater, trips to LA, and across the globe, while he always cheered on Miriam’s career as an elementary school teacher in Great Neck for 25 years.
Living well for most of his years, Marvin will be remembered for his sharp sense of humor, one-of-a-kind laugh, and capacity to recall history’s nuances, here and afar. A funeral to honor Marvin’s life will be held at Temple Emanuel, 150 Hicks Lane, Great Neck, NY on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 10:00am. Burial will be held at Beth Olam Cemetery, South Windsor, CT. at 2:30pm.
Donations in Marvin’s name can be made to the Yale Class of ’49 or any charity that reminds you of Marvin’s good will.
