Morton Larry Nathan was born on July 30, 1935, the son of Rose Fleiger Nathan and Benjamin Nathan. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He had two older brothers, Herbert Nathan and Stuart Nathan, both deceased and a sister Gloria Nathan Seidman. The four siblings maintained a close relationship throughout their lives.
Morty graduated from New Utrecht High School in 1953 and enlisted in the army a few years later, after the Korean War. He was stationed in Japan and worked as a photographer. His father, Ben passed away at age 58 and Morty took care of his mother, Rose. Once she passed away at age 70, Morty rented an apartment in Brooklyn.
Morty worked full time in the garment district and worked part time at Gimbels Department Store, mainly in the housewares department. Morty enjoyed working with the public but he wanted a more secure position. He then followed his brothers and applied for a position with the Transit Authority. He started there as a conductor and then worked as a motorman.
Morty never married and had no children but he kept very interested in the lives of his seven nieces and nephews. He offered his advice which was thoughtful and helpful. He attended all family celebrations, bris ceremonies, bar and bat mitzvahs, weddings, and all holiday dinners. He had a very good relationship with his sister-in-laws, Helen Nathan and Vivian Nathan. He followed the legal career of his brother-in-law, Irving Seidman.
In Morty’s younger years the families got together pretty often and Morty enjoyed the time spent with his cousins.
Morty’s hobbies were photography, restoring old furniture and collecting all manner of knick knacks and wall art.
He was a very friendly and talkative person and enjoyed meeting new people. About 25 years ago Morty bought a home in Boca Raton, Florida. He was still working full time so vacationed in Florida. Morty was very generous and offered the family to stay at his home for vacations. When Morty retired he lived full time in Florida. Our family called him Morty but his friends and neighbors in Florida called him Larry. He became very friendly with his neighbor, Gigi. She hosted a 90th birthday celebration for him with friends and neighbors. Toward the end of his life, Gigi took wonderful care of Morty.
Morty passed away on February 4, 2026 at the age of 90. He is survived by his sister, Gloria Nathan Seidman, nephews Mark Nathan, Brian Seidman, Ross Nathan (Barbara Bonessi), nieces Lynn Nathan Keller (Scott Keller), Ellen Seidman (Gregory Kaufman), Lauren Seidman Kaltman, Cheryl Nathan Rose (Brian Rose), great nieces Sheena Keller (fiancé Jacel Faracco), Briana Keller (Thalia Keller), Kayla Kaufman (fiancé Jeremy Chimene-Weiss), Kaitlyn Rose, great nephews Max Kaltman, James Kaltman (fiancé Alexis Komatsu), Daniel Kaufman, Daniel Rose and great great nephew, Myles Keller and great great niece, Haisley Keller.
