Susan Lori Goldberg

October 10, 1957 - July 20, 2026

It is with great sadness to announce that Susan Lori Goldberg has passed away suddenly at age 68. Susan was a treasured teacher and mentor, beloved friend, sister, and cousin, and so much more to her many close friends and relatives.

She was born to Sidney and Jean Goldberg on October 10,1957 in Brooklyn, NY. Susan was preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling, Caryn Goldberg. She is survived by several first cousins, first cousins once removed, 2nd cousins, and spouses, who all loved her and were blessed to know her.

Susan grew up in Far Rockaway, Queens. She spent many summer days at her parent’s ice cream and waffle stand on the Far Rockaway beach boardwalk.

Susan was a devoted reading specialist and very passionate about her work in Literacy. She cared deeply about guiding her students in their becoming enthusiastic readers. Susan was the membership chairperson and worked diligently on LCLI (Literacy Council of Long Island) website and presented workshops as well as helped in programming. She not only devoted her time to the LCLI, but she also was very involved with the Half Hollow Hills Teacher Association and spent endless hours working on their newsletter and the large membership emails. When Susan was asked to do something to help someone, she did so without hesitation and did it well.

Susan received her Master of Education degree from Queens College. She started her career as an extraordinary educator in 1983 and taught for 19 years at Brooklyn’s PS 276, teaching children in grades K-2 on all subjects. In 2002 she transferred to Half Hollow Hills Central school district where she was a reading specialist and taught all grades as well as children with special needs, before retiring in 2023. Susan was that sought after teacher who created strategies and techniques to benefit her students. However, even in retirement she worked and volunteered her services for LCLI and the Half Moon Teachers Association. She was adored and admired and very appreciated by those in her groups. She, of course enjoyed reading and was participating in 2 book clubs when she retired.

Susan was funny and well informed and her easily identifiable laughter was infectious in any setting. This upbeat spirit was consistent despite being an avid, lifelong Met fan. Susan was so easy to talk to and was such a great listener. She was knowledgeable on so many topics.

Susan was very generous and thoughtful and always willing to help where she could. She cared greatly for the causes her family and friends cared about and donated whenever asked. Susan’s indelible legacy can be seen in the hundreds of children she taught the magic of reading to. She will be profoundly missed by all those who knew and loved her and had the privilege to have had Susan in their lives.
