Dr. Alfred R. Slighter, age 92, retired clergyman of the United Church of Christ died on April 29, 2018 in Greeley. He leaves his wife of 67 years, Katherine Staffeld Slighter; three children: Thomas Slighter and wife Bonnie (Schoonmaker) Slighter, Timothy Slighter and Patty Slighter; and four grandchildren: Tamica Dear, Joshua Slighter, Meaghan Slighter and Austin Slighter. Daughter Reb Mixon precedes him in death.
Dr. Slighter was born on January 21, 1929 at Syracuse, New York. He received a BS degree from New York University for Teachers at Buffalo, a Masters of Divinity from Boston University School of Theology in Boston, MA, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR. He served churches in Columbus, Absarokee and Fishtail, MT, Burbank, CA, San Francisco, CA, Corvallis, OR and Greeley, CO.
Following his retirement in 1992 he served as the interim Minister at Stillwater Montana Parish, Zion Congregational Church in Cheyenne, WY, Christ Church in Longmont, CO and First Congregational Church in Loveland, CO. He also volunteered as the Chaplain for Hospice of Northern Colorado.
Dr. Slighter was a past president of the Greeley Kiwanis Club and a member of their Board of Directors. He was on the Board for Directors for: the Weld Information and Referral Service, the Volunteer Resource Board of United Way, and The Transitional House. He was a member of the Habitat for Humanity Fund Raising, Dream Team, the Weld County AIDS Coalition, the Advisory Committee for the Gerontology Department of the University of Northern Colorado, the Colorado Commission for United Ministries in Higher Education, the Senior Golf Association, and was a past president of the Social Science Circle. He helped found the Greeley Interfaith Association and was a past chairperson of that organization.
Dr. Slighter enjoyed golf, tennis, physical fitness, gardening, traveling, reading helping others and spending time with his wife, Kay, and visiting his children, grandchildren and friends.
Services will be held at the First Congregational Church Sunday, June 10, 2018 at 2:00 P.M.
