Bertha was born on November 1, 1942, in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, to Willis Grose and Mary Hartley. The youngest of nine children, she graduated from Lewistown High School and began her working life as a nurse’s aide. It was during this time that she met William Gilbert, and in 1974, they moved to Colorado for his job.
Bertha was a hardworking and devoted mother who worked two jobs while raising her children. She served as a nurse’s aide at Weld County General Hospital and Fair Acres Manor, dedicating herself to caring for others while providing for her family.
In her free time, Bertha enjoyed crafts, growing flowers, knitting, and cross-stitch. She especially loved making handmade treasures for her family, including doilies, slippers, and dishcloths. Each creation was a reflection of her thoughtfulness and the love she shared with those closest to her.
Bertha is survived by her children, Penny Grose, Maxine Hayward (Stewart), Mary Kniceley (James), Nancy Willis, and Steve Gilbert; and her sister, Arlene “Anna” Hain.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis Grose and Mary Hartley, and her husband, William Gilbert.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of her children and all those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
