

Bess M. Hammond, 87, of Greeley, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Renaissance Memory Care in Littleton, CO. Bess was born February 23, 1930 in Natchitoches, Louisiana to Ernest and Evie (Sibley) McQueen.
Bess grew up in Natchitoches, graduating from Natchitoches High School. She married O.M. Shoemaker, Jr. in 1949 in Los Angeles, CA. He died in 1961. She then married Robert Hammond on August 3, 1963 in Natchitoches, LA. Robert died in 2003.
As a homemaker Bess loved to cook. She also enjoyed her volunteer work. She was a Red Cross Pink Lady for 30 years; she and Robert started the Outreach Program at Trinity Episcopal Church where they were longtime members.
Bess is survived by her daughters Karen Boysen, Janet Volkl, and step-daughter, Janet Prough; son, Jim Hammond; brother, Leon McQueen; sister, Shirley Tyler; eight grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband’s, O.M. Shoemaker and Robert Hammond; step-daughter, Janice Smith; one granddaughter; one sister; and four of her brothers.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Trinity Episcopal Church. Inurnment at Trinity Episcopal Gardens. Reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
