I just came across mention of Bill's passing tonight, May 13, 2009.  Permit me to share a memory of Bill dating back to the Summer of 1963, when Bill and I had just completed our Junior year at Washburn Rural H.S. and were living in the housing area of Forbes AFB in Topeka, KS.  I had just bought a 1949 Ford with a blown clutch for $50.  I spent $21 on clutch parts and a week of work in the driveway and fixed the car.  During that week a 1969  Austin Healy Sprite (called a ""Bugeye"") was offered to me for $325, so I joined the credit union, got a loan and bought it.  My father wanted the ""used car lot"" in the front yard cleaned up, so I sold the Ford to Bill Finnerty for $75.  Imagine my chagrin that next Winter when I found myself on the school bus because the Sprite wouldn't start in the cold and there was Bill with a Ford full of young ladies passing the bus on the way to school!  I didn't know Bill well, as there was something of a divide between the officer's kids and the enlisted men's kids (we were, literally, on opposite sides of University Drive in the housing area), but I DO remember him as an often smiling, pleasant guy. as one of bill's former supervisors here with the office of inspector general, i wish to express my deepest condolences to his family. he will be missed by me and our staff here in the great plains region. as the supervisor who hired bill, i feel a special loss of a good friend and co worker. i will recall the memories of the time had with him and know that he is in an eternal place now. god bless you, bill.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Bill. He was such a fun and wonderful person to work with. Bill never had a negative word to say about anything or anyone. He will be greatly missed. My prayers and thoughts are with his family during this sorrowful time.
