Carmen grew up and attended schools in the Johnstown and Milliken area. She moved to Loveland with her family, where she helped on farms.
In 1947, she married Pete Ortiz. After their marriage, Pete and Carmen lived in Loveland. They then moved to California in 1958. They later divorced in 1972. Carmen continued living in California until the mid-1980s, when she returned to Colorado and lived in Fort Collins. She then married Marcelino “Max” Alicea in Fort Collins in 1994. He died on March 29, 2003. In 2012, she moved to Greeley to live with her daughter, Shirley.
Carmen was a member of Calvary Chapel in Fort Collins. She worked in a drugstore in Loveland and she and her sister were the first Hispanic people to be hired.
Carmen is survived by two daughters, Shirley Ortiz-Estrada of Greeley and Mrya Ortiz of West Covina, California; a son, Santos Ortiz of Angel Fire, New Mexico; sisters, Fannie Medina (Rudy) of Greeley, Dorothy DiGuglielmo of Mesquite, Nevada, Annie Greenfield and Mattie Hererra (Abel) all of Loveland, Priscilla Ramos (Sam) of Mesquite, Katie Stack and Flora Romero (Joe) all of Loveland and Judy Montanõ of Thornton; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Ortiz, sister, Tiny Martinez and brother, Arthur Moya.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Calvary Chapel, 2602 West 27th Street, Greeley. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.
