Donny was born on February, 19, 1965 to Robert and Margaret (Peggy) Butterfield. Donny graduated from Hill City High School in 1983. He began his career shortly after graduation as a log truck driver. In 1995, he became the owner/operator of Butterfield Transport. He thoroughly enjoyed driving his truck. Seizing an opportunity to expand his business, Donny ventured into buffalo ranching.
Donny accomplished many things in his life including becoming an Eagle Scout and becoming a certified welder. His favorite pastimes were always spent outdoors either camping, horseback riding, or riding anything fast like his Harley or ATV. He loved his animals and cared for many dogs, cats and horses during his lifetime. He could often be seen with his dog Bella, whom he referred to as his “coworker”, and together they were active in the Buckaroo’s where Donny became a Greenhorn in 2014 and later a full-fledged member.
Donny loved his family most of all. He is survived by his son Ernest Morgan Smith II (Cheri), and four grandchildren, Payton, Madison, Kadince, and Everett of Pueblo, CO; father Robert (Ardis) Butterfield of Hill City, SD; two brothers Bill (Becky) of Green River, WY; David (Tim Hughes) of Las Vegas, NV; two sisters, Robin Meiners (Rocky Nowlan), Hot Springs, SD; and Karen Park of Corpus Christi, TX along with many nieces and nephews.
Donny will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Please join us to celebrate his life and bid him farewell. Funeral services will be held at the Hill City High School Theatre on Saturday, April 23 at 10:00 am with a reception to follow at the Little White Church.
