Elizabeth “Betty” Walters passed away peacefully in the excellent care of the staff at the Fort Collins Good Samaritan on June 22, 2016 at the age of 94. Betty was born on January 21, 1922 in Lostwood, North Dakota to John and Elizabeth Heppner. She was the oldest of 8 children. On June 21, 1941 Betty married Joseph Walters and they lived in Stanley, North Dakota to start what would be 70 years of marriage. They then moved to Garrison, North Dakota in 1945 where Betty worked as a waitress at Elsie’s Cafe and later at the Stone Inn where her customers looked forward to her upbeat personality and quick wit. Joe and Betty moved to Loveland, Colorado in 1981 to enjoy their retirement years. Betty was a very creative person working with artificial flowers, crocheting, copper tooled pictures, and sewing. She loved playing cards, putting jigsaw puzzles together, square dancing and taking care of her song birds. She was a great cook and baker. She always had homemade pies on hand and made the best spritz cookies. She was a master lefse maker and many a good lutefisk and lefse supper was enjoyed during the holidays. Betty’s faith was very important to her. She was a member of Peace with Christ Lutheran Church and was thrilled when members of the church would come to visit her. She especially enjoyed the birthday parties they had for her. Betty is survived by her sons, Joseph (Sanae) Walters of Canyon Country, California and Jeff (Cindy) Walters of Fort Collins; 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; sisters, Susan Dick, Linda (Paul) Spenst, Ruth Hoffer; sister-in-law, Ann Heppner. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Bennie and Jake Heppner, sisters, Hulda Eslinger and Bertha Behles. The Walters family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Good Samaritan for the loving care they gave to both Joe and Betty for the past eight years. The staff truly loved Betty, especially her witty banter. Funeral services will be Monday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m. at the Fort Collins Good Samaritan Home, 508 W Trilby. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Betty may be made to Good Samaritan in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 650 W. Drake Rd., Fort Collins, CO 80526.
