Ellen M. Maddox

Margaret Ellen Maddox, 91 years old, died Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Hospice. She was born July 28, 1919 to Robert T. and Tollie (Pierce) Maddox, near Port, Oklahoma.

She attended school in Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas and Washington. She graduated from Longmont High School in 1937, and after three years of domestic work, she went McPherson, Kansas where she received an associate degree. From there she went to Seattle, Washington and received her A.B. degree in English in 1947. Her first year of teaching was at Pleasant Hill, New Mexico.

Ellen made her home in Greeley where she attended Colorado State College of Education, now University of Northern Colorado earning a master’s degree in English. She taught at LaSalle and after nine years she was assigned to Heath Jr. High School, where she spent twenty-seven years as the librarian. She retired from the library in 1982. Miss Maddox taught another six years in District 6 as a substitute teacher. Ellen held offices in both the Woman’s Club and the Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary educational association.

Ellen was a member of Greeley Wesleyan Church for over twenty years and was affiliated with the Nazarene Church for more than twenty years before that. She served both churches in various positions, such as teaching Sunday school, leading Bible studies, singing in the choir and leading songs for worship.

She is survived by three sisters, Ruby M. Shupe (Jack) of Greeley, Loretta (Fay) of Pratt, Kansas, and Esther Maddox of Spring Arbor, Michigan; fifteen nieces and nephews; thirty grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and numerous great-grand nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and three sisters.

Visitation 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Stoddard Funeral Home. Funeral service 10 a.m. Wednesday at Greeley Wesleyan Church. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.
