George Keith (“Keith”) Elmund passed away at home in Fort Collins, Colorado on September 19, 2016 after battling lymphoma and other medical issues for several months. Keith was born May 31, 1946 in Elmhurst Illinois to George and Margaretha Elmund, who both preceded him in death. He grew up in Elmhurst and attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana from 1959 to 1964. He also worked as an electrical apprentice for his father’s company, George Elmund Electric from 1962-1964. He then attended Colorado State University, earning a BS in Microbiology. Keith served nearly six years in the Air Force and Air Force Reserves and earned the rank of First Lieutenant. He was stationed in Taiwan for a time, which he loved. Primary duties included disaster preparedness, which served him well in his career. He was a graduate research associate at CSU from 1973-1976 and earned a PhD in Environmental Microbiology from Colorado State University in 1977. Keith worked for the City of Fort Collins Utilities as the Environmental Services Manager from March 1977 until the time of his death. During that time he managed two laboratories and numerous projects. He served as mentor to countless young scientists and colleagues, and promoted the careers of many. He also served on research committees for graduate students at Colorado State University. His intelligence, wisdom, wit, and massive vocabulary were well known and admired by his coworkers. He was named Employee of the Year in May 2016. Keith was also a talented musician. He played violin for the Front Range Music Guild and other local groups, as well as composing his own pieces, which he enjoyed recording in his home studio. For several years he joined with other city employees to perform Christmas carols at office buildings in the days leading up to the holiday. A lover of hunting dogs, Keith shared his life with numerous Golden Retrievers and his last dog, a pointer mix named Trixie, who kept him company at his acreage and was ever by his side. Because he was adopted as a baby, Keith held a life-long fascination with genealogy and was surprised to learn of his ancestry with the advent of DNA testing. Always generous with his knowledge, he helped others trace their roots as well. Keith is survived by his sister, Peggy Tundo (Sam); nieces Shelby Knudson, Samantha LaCroix (Kris), and Marisa Tundo; grand nephews Kevin and Joshua Breitbach, and many cousins and dear friends. A memorial service will be held at Allnutt Funeral Home, 650 W Drake Rd, Fort Collins, CO, on November 13 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will occur at a later date at his family’s historic plot in Minnesota.
