Gladys Mae Westover was born on a freezing cold day on January 14, 1930 in Milliken, CO to Howard and Stella Snedden. She passed on April 7, 2024. Gladys was the third of four siblings, Phyllis (Phooey) Spaur, Howard (Butch) Snedden, and her sister Virginia (Lambie) Goldman. At 14 years old she started her first job on a spud dock sorting potatoes. To get her first job she arrived half an hour early to apply and her boss was impressed and she started work that day. Gladys was very popular throughout high school. She was crowned Homecoming Queen, Senior Prom Queen, and enjoyed singing, spending time with friends. She also won a blue ribbon for her chocolate cake, which she would always bring to family gatherings and it was definitely a blue ribbon worthy dessert! And rightfully so, it was the last dessert she made for her family for Easter this year.
Gladys married Jay Westover on February 14, 1952. They welcomed their son, Daniel Jay Westover on December 26, 1952. Her husband, Jay, served in the military for 20+ years, so the family made homes in Colorado, Cheyenne, San Diego, Nebraska City, and eventually settled down back in Colorado. Gladys worked for the phone company for 20+ years. She prided herself on never missing a day of work, and having perfect attendance. She even earned a charm bracelet for her work attendance and enjoyed collecting charms throughout the years for her dedication. Gladys retired in 1982, and spent her time taking care of her family, volunteering, and taking her first (and last) motorcycle ride with Jay to Canada. Gladys loved the warm weather. Spending the summer at Blue Mesa in a 5th wheel with a boat, and she eventually bought a winter home in Apache Junction, AZ. She thoroughly enjoyed escaping the cold Colorado winters to sun herself by the pool, playing BINGO and socializing with her friends. She loved thrift store shopping, flea markets, yard sales, and collecting a variety of treasures along the way. Her vast collection of eclectic works of art decorated her home, and brought her great happiness. She also enjoyed spending time with her son Dan, and his wife, Diane taking scenic drives on the weekends and enjoying meals together. Gladys enjoyed playing BINGO, doing needlepoint work, crocheting, and socializing with her friends and family. She was a gracious woman with her strong opinions and a loving heart. But she loved her son more than anything.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Stella Snedden; her husband Jay Westover; and her siblings Phyllis, Butch, and Lambie
She will be missed by her son Dan (Diane) Westover; granddaughter Dani (Bobby) Downey; great-grandchildren Alex Cotts, Ryan and Jake Downey, nieces Pennie (Quentin) Goodwin, Randee (Ron) Cook, brother-in-law Delbert Spaur, step-granddaughter, Katie and (Alex) Bye, and great step-grandchildren Dylan, Warren, Trey, and Jordan, step-granddaughter, Emilee (Jesse), Abrahams and great-step-granddaughter Genevieve.
