Glen “Curly” Walter, 93, of Greeley, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018 at Grace Pointe. He was born July 21, 1925 to Fred and Katherine (Ostermiller) Walter in Lincoln, NE. He was raised in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943. On 9-18-43, he enlisted in the Navy having served as a Radioman 3rd Class aboard a sub chaser in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged on 3-19-46.
After discharge, Glen started working at Western Electric where he met Ruth Wheeler. Shortly thereafter, they were married on 3-19-49.
In 1948, Glen began his State Farm career in Lincoln, transferred to the regional office in Columbia, MO in 1959 and later settled in Greeley when the State Farm office opened in 1963. His career with State Farm spanned 39 years, retiring 7-21-1987.
Curly and Ruthie traveled to the Bahamas for their 25th anniversary and traveled back east to New York and surrounding states after they retired. Most of their traveling consisted on going back and forth to Lincoln to visit family and friends.
Curly’s love of golf began when he started skipping school to caddy at the Lincoln Country Club to earn extra money. He later started swinging the club, which led him to winning the 1st flight of the Lincoln City tournament in 1954 and continued with winning approximately 30-40 golf tournaments. The only thing that equaled his love of golf was his devotion as a lifelong fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Glen was a hard worker and a man devoted to his family. His sense of humor was one of the many reasons he made numerous lifelong friends.
He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Elks and the American Legion.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Victor Walter and son-in-law John Murphy.
He is survived by his daughters Sue Murphy and Janet (Jack) Lewis, all of Greeley. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren, Cammi Hill and Noel Hill, Jr. of Greeley and Codie Allen of West Palm Beach, FL, 4 great-grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 Wednesday at Stoddard Funeral Home. His memorial service will be held Thursday at 11:00 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1800 21st Ave, with interment immediately following at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Weld County Food Bank, Meals-on-Wheels or the Weld County Humane Society all in care of Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 West 28th Street, Greeley, Colorado 80634.
