Howard served in the United States Army National Guard from 1955-1959 and the Army from 1960-1962. He was stationed in the United States and for one year in Korea. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. He worked in Combat Construction and was honorably discharged at the rank of Specialist 4th Class.
Howard worked as a truck driver for most of his working life. He drove trucks for several companies and the Weld County Road and Bridge Department until he had to take medical retirement due to a work related injury.
Howard was a member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2121, the Hill-N-Park Church and the Hill-N-Park Senior Community Center.
He is survived by four daughters, Tracy Cummings (Danny) of Grove, Oklahoma, Carrie Cudworth (Rick) of Greeley and Cindy Garner and Donna Alldredge both of Grove; two sons, Garry Johns of Greeley and Gregg Ault of Loveland; two sisters, Helen Gordy (Joe) of Greeley and Delores Gonsior of Cheyenne, Wyoming; brother, Ronald Schafer (Barbara) of Greeley; best friend and wife, Tony Gurule (Cindy) of Greeley; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Rothe and brothers, Alvin, Marvin and Larry Rothe.
Friends may visit from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Stoddard Funeral Home. Funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Stoddard Funeral Home. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.
