I was lucky enough to be in one of Mrs. Van Gundy's classes my junior year and then to be an aide for her my senior year (1978). Her no nonsense approach to learning brought out the best in her students. We kept in touch for many years after graduation. She encouraged me to become a teacher myself, which I have happily been doing for nearly 30 years now. I will forever remember her with love and affection. Rest in peace, Mrs. Van Gundy.

. Irene was taken the evening after the Sandy Hook Elementary school children. Her granddaughter Anne said this: "The day Irene went home, Heaven truly needed another teacher." I thought this was so true. Such a wonderful teacher and friend. Truly we were priviledged to know her and be in her life many years. Our boys stated what a wonderful woman, friend and teacher she was also and wanted her family to know she meant alot to them. Thanks to her for all the help she gave whenever it was needed. You are an angel now and free to fly wherever you want. We'll always miss your humor, friendship and love. Blessing to all the families. Maxine, Gary, Greg and Mickey Bracken

My Aunt Irene was a remarkable person in going back to school, after being a housewife and going through a divorce, to earn her degree and become such an outstanding teacher. Being a banker in Denver, I was always amazed at the number of students that recognized our last name and always asked if I was related. Those former students always said she was one of the best teachers that they ever had. She will be missed.

I remember Irene's young days back in Sterling. She and my mother Mary Yenter Kloberdanz and Betty Howe We're always busy reading and running around together. I'm sure Irene's influence was what kept my mother reading throughout her life up until the time Alzheimer's Took it away from her. I worked with Irene for years at Greeley West, and I always envision her bustling from place to place to get things done to get to the baseball game. She loved her baseball team. Irene was a no nonsense teacher who cared for each student who walked through her door, and she expected them to be at their very best. They responded by being at their very best. She was a dedicated friend who would always go the extra mile for you and be there to raise your spirits when those tough days hit. Irene will definitely be pulled into service immediately in the big classroom on the other side.
