Jim moved to Denver when he was three months old. He attended schools in Denver and graduated from North High School.
Jim met Meribelle Wood at Porter Hospital in Denver and they were married on July 4, 1948 in Brewster, Kansas and began starting their new home in Denver. Jim and Meribelle moved to Greeley in 1970, later to Estes Park and then to Loveland. They moved back to Greeley in 2000. Jim was a nurturing family man who greatly loved his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed fishing, even when he caught nothing. Jim was an honest man and had superior integrity. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand.
Jim began his military service with the United States Merchant Marines in 1943. During his service he traveled the world. Jim was a founding member of the Estes Park VFW. He was also a member of the U.S. Merchant Marines Veterans of World War II.
Jim was a Pioneer member with Mountain Bell Telephone Company. During his many years with Mountain Bell, Jim held several different positions, retiring on April 1, 1978 as a cable splicer foreman.
Jim is survived by two daughters, Amy Tregoning of Greeley and Barbara (Michael) Dumler of Evans; one brother, Maynard O. (Jerry) Burnett of Aurora; six grandchildren, Andrew Burnett of Greeley, Michael (Tammye) Adams of Greeley, James (Dena) Adams of Johnstown, Jennifer (Andy) Smukler of Aurora, Sandra Johnson of Greeley and Mike Jr. (Doriann) Dumler of Colorado Springs and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother and his wife, Herbert Franklin and Virginia Burnett.
A horse drawn carriage procession will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stoddard Funeral Home. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.
