Jess Bond

Jess grew up on the family farm north of Kersey and attended Kersey schools. He was a member of the first graduating class of Platte Valley High School in 1962. On September 17, 1966, he married Irene Steinmetz in Greeley. He worked at Monfort of Colorado for 13 years, first as a meat cutter then as a tallow rendering operator. In 1982 he left Monforts to farm full time on his own farm, which was also north of Kersey, raising pigs, corn and hay. Jess and Irene showed pigs all over the country and attended many National and State shows. Jess was a Swine Superintendent at the Weld County Fair for many years and enjoyed watching his grandkids show pigs and goats.

Jess was a volunteer firefighter for the Kersey Fire Department for 30 years and a Fire Instructor at Aims Community College for several years. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Platte Valley Fire Protection District.

Jess served in the Army National Guard for six years. He was a member of Greeley Wesleyan Church.

He was an avid fisherman, and his favorite places included Colorado, Canada and Alaska. He also bought and sold collectible farm toys. He loved to travel with his wife.

In 2013 their farm was completely covered by floodwaters and they have worked for the past year to recover with the help of the church and many great friends.

Jess is survived by his wife, Irene; son, Don (Lynn) Bond; daughter, Cynthia (Darren) Horn; brother, David Bond; sister, Carol Bond; and grandchildren, Dustin and Kyle Horn and Jamie and Jessie Bond, all of Kersey, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Stoddard Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at the Greeley Wesleyan Church at 10:00 a.m. on Friday November 14. Interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
