Larry was reared and educated in Greeley, graduating from Greeley Central High School in 1967. After graduation, he entered the US Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam, including the Tet Offensive in 1968. While serving in the Marine Corps, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Navy Achievement Medal with V (for Valor).
After his honorable discharge, Larry worked side by side with his father at Mitchell & Sons Floor Covering. He also attended Aims College, and earned his Associate’s Degree in Fire Science. In 1972, he joined the Greeley Fire Department at the age of 22 years old. He served with the Greeley Fire Department for 34 years.
On April 28, 2007, Larry married Angie Bomar in Lake Havasu, Arizona.
After retirement, he enjoyed time with his family, traveling, riding his motorcycles and golfing at Highland Hills with his friends. He loved time with his constant and loyal companion, “Kobe”, his dachshund.
Larry is survived by his wife, Angie; daughters, Kelly Lucero and Angela C. Mitchell both of Greeley; son, Lonny Daniel Mitchell of Zion, Illinois; father, Don Mitchell (Bonnie) of Greeley; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his mother and brother, Lonny.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, March 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Generations Church (formerly Greeley Wesleyan Church), 3600 West 22nd Street, Greeley.
