Loraine, born to Daniel and Phillipine MacDonald on April 21, 1932 (the day the banks closed its doors) along with her twin sister Elaine, were welcomed by their older sister Dolores “Dee” Allnutt. The MacDonald family’s plan changed and Loraine’s mother asked her father for help in the purchase of a farm to support the MacDonald family.
While Dan worked outside the home, Phil MacDonald wanted to support the family, and she did with the assistance of her three daughters. Loraine’s mother raised crops on the farm and later raised hay to feed the milk cows, which the three MacDonald girls milked the old-fashioned way. The farm did not have electricity for milking machines, therefore the girls, by their hands, brought milk, butter, and cheese to the table, with excess being sold to the local cheese factory.
Loraine loved ice skating, was a wonderful seamstress, and loved music - playing her accordion and sang in her church. However, she did not like to cook!
Following graduation from high school Loraine, and her twin sister Elaine, moved to Detroit, where she was employed in various positions. She went on to further her education and she became a life-long employee of General Motors. At General Motors, she met her future husband, Richard Perkins. Encouraged by Dick, she obtained further education, thus enhancing value to her employer.
Life was good for Dick and Loraine, traveling, and playing tennis whenever and wherever possible. However, cancer took Dick’s life early in 1987. Childless, Loraine continued to maintain their home in Pleasant Ridge with care and served General Motors until her retirement in 1997.
Declining in years, Loraine began to have memory problems, and because she was alone, she was brought to Greeley and began a new life at Grace Pointe. She was not happy, as Alzheimer’s had entered her life, as it did her twin sister Elaine.
Loraine was physically strong her entire life. She continued to fight through a fractured hip and dementia until her last day on earth. Her message to those who loved her was “ENJOY A CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM CONE”.
