March 11, 1937 – May 2, 2018
Lorraine B. (Baumgartner) Witt, 81, of Brentwood, TN, passed away on May 2, 2018 at Brighton Gardens of Brentwood.
She was born March 11, 1937, in Denver, to John and Katie Baumgartner of Prospect Valley, Colorado. She graduated high school from Prospect Valley Centralized School in 1955 and received an A.B. degree in Music Education from Colorado State College in Greeley (now University of Northern Colorado). Lorraine married James (“Jim”) Witt on June 24, 1960, in Prospect Valley. They lived briefly near Kansas City where Jim completed his degree as a physical therapist, before moving to New Jersey where she taught music for schools in Elizabeth and Westfield.
In 1963, Lorraine and Jim moved to Mill Valley, California, where their son John was born. In 1968, Jim’s job transfer with the Public Health Service took them to Savannah, Georgia, where their son Joel was born. In 1974, the family moved to Springfield, Missouri, where Lorraine taught private piano lessons to more than one hundred students. She served as choir director, soloist, and pianist for church music ministries in California, Georgia, and Missouri.
In 1994, Lorraine and Jim moved back to her parents’ house and farm in Prospect Valley, Colorado, to care for her elderly parents. They served in the music and youth ministry for Prospect Community Church before relocating in 2013 to Brentwood, Tennessee. She will be remembered as an accomplished musician, energetic teacher, loving wife, devoted mother, and fun-loving “Nana” to her grandchildren.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sister Helen (Baumgartner) Huwa. She is survived by her husband Jim, by her sons John (wife Mary) and Joel (wife Nicole) Witt, her grandchildren Christina, Jason, Rachel, Natalie, and Ashlyn, and her niece Bonnie (Huwa) Reiff.

My name is Dianna Lemaire, and I am a piano teacher in Springfield, MO. I met Lorraine through the Piano Teachers Forum, and we served together as officers. Lorraine was the president, and I was the treasurer. I had not been teaching very long when I met Lorraine, and she was very helpful in giving me good teaching tips. Part of my studio policy still contains information I gleaned from Lorraine. She was a lovely, helpful Christian lady, and I am glad I had a chance to know her and to serve in the Piano Teachers Forum with her. She was definitely a good influence on my teaching career. I am very sorry for your loss of this sweet lady. God give each of you peace and many sweet memories.

Aunt "Rene" was truly a wonderful Christian woman. I grew up across the street from her parents home in Prospect Valley and adopted her parents as another set of my own grandparents. That was a good location to get to see them when she and Uncle Jim were visiting in the area. My parents, brothers and I visited them in Mill Valley, CA. I visited them in Springfield, MO myself, then again with my family. She was a consummate professional as a musician, a wonderful cook (we still enjoy her Parmesan Chicken recipe) and as a person, I can't recall a conversation that we didn't laugh about something. During their later Prospect Valley years, we got to see them much more often. We celebrated a number of special occasions together those years and I look forward to continuing the celebration in heaven when my time comes...
