Lupe R Gutierrez, 101, passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2022 at home surrounded by her family. She was born on April 13, 1920 in Lamar, Colorado to Tesfero and Ramona Rodriguez. She was the middle child of five children who included siblings Jesse, Abundio, Alice, and Margaret. Her family moved to the Eaton/Ault area when Lupe was a child where she attended school. In 1938 she married Jesus Cervantes Gutierrez in St Peter’s Catholic Church in Greeley, CO. Lupe and Jess had one son, Tony (Georgia) Gutierrez, and one daughter, Rita (Joe) Gaona. Her husband passed away on May 30, 1964. Lupe lived in Eaton for most of her life and worked as a homemaker. She was well known for her delicious homemade tortillas, tamales, menudo, and salsa. Lupe did the cooking for a small bar in Eaton, and people would come from far and wide just to have a bowl of her menudo. She didn’t drive, but she loved to go on car rides and enjoy the scenery before she lost her sight. She always enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and extended family. She had an amazing memory, and the family loved to listen to her stories from the past. She also enjoyed having a beer occasionally and credited that in part to her longevity.
Lupe is survived by her son and daughter, 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren and 2 great-great-great grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews and extended family also survive her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers and sisters, her husband, her son-in-law Joe Gaona, and one great-grandchild Manny Salazar and one great-grandchild JoJo Gaona.
