

Mary Ellen was born on May 23rd, 1935 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Thomas and Margaret Maloney. She graduated from Marquette University in 1956. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, a national Jesuit honor society. She married Duane Smith on April 28th, 1956. They had two boys, Mark and Michael, and lived the majority of their lives in Brookfield, Wisconsin. They moved to Fort Collins in early 2010.
Mary Ellen was an English and History teacher at various schools in the Milwaukee area in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. After leaving teaching, Mary Ellen ran member events at their family business, Moorland Park Indoor Tennis Club in New Berlin, Wisconsin. She enjoyed the active social environment that was a hallmark of their business. She also remained very active in multiple Marquette University alumni organizations.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Duane, in 2012. She is survived by her sons Mark (Peggy) of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Michael (Noel) of Fair Oaks, California, two grandchildren, Amy and Molly Smith of Denver, Colorado, and her brother, Mike (Hazel) Maloney of Portland, Maine, and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jack Cook, and survived by his wife Pat of Thousand Oaks, California.
A Catholic mass in honor of her life will take place at 2:30 PM on Friday, February 17th, 2017, at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Fort Collins. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Collinwood Assisted Living for the Mary Ellen Smith Memorial Fund, 5055 S. Lemay Ave., Fort Collins, CO 80525.
