Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 64 years, Jeanne (Bertolet), of Loveland, CO; daughter Suzanne (husband Larry) Brazil, of Loveland, CO; son Eric (wife Julie) Steinruck, of Castle Rock, CO; and a brother, Donald A. Steinruck of Castle Rock, CO. He is also survived by five grandchildren all of CO; Emily Brazil Jones, Stefanie Brazil, Graham Steinruck, Katherine Steinruck and William Steinruck, and great grandchildren, Robert Jones and Lyla Jones.
Norman was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 18, 1927 to Joseph & Elizabeth Arrell Steinruck. He attended Central High School where he graduated as a member of Class 183 in 1945. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy. After serving in the Navy, Norman attended and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, where he was a member of the rowing team and Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. During the summers, Norm served as Captain of the Surf City Beach Lifeguards on Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
Norm and Jeanne met in 1946 at a church dance in Philadelphia. They were married on May 19, 1951 at Christ Church in Philadelphia. In 1951, he joined Motors Insurance Corporation, a division of General Motors, and spent his entire career there. Norm and Jeanne raised two children and lived in Huntingdon Valley, PA, Glen Head, NY and Marlton, NJ. Norman was an active member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Cherry Hill. He was passionate about music and had a wonderful singing voice, participating in choirs and performances over the years. Norm enjoyed sailing, was a member of the Surf City Yacht Club from 1953 until his death, and served as Commodore for the years 1967 and 1968.
In 1987, Norman retired from GM as branch manager after 36 years of service and fulfilled his lifelong dream of living and sailing on a Nauticat 33 sailboat, the “Emily Belle,” around Florida and the Bahamas. The extended family visited Norman and Jeanne on the “Emily Belle” often and have many fond memories of spending time together aboard the boat. Norm and Jeanne made lifelong friends wherever they cruised, many of which they are still in touch with today. The couple spent their later retirement years as “snowbirds” in Lake Wales, Florida.
In June 2014, Norman and Jeanne relocated to Loveland, CO to be closer to their immediate family, and Norm spent his last days surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is very much loved and will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held at Good Samaritan Loveland Village Chapel, 2101 S. Garfield Avenue on Sunday, August 2 at 3:00 pm. A Philadelphia memorial service will be announced at a later date.
