Dr. Patrick James Sullivan, 84, of Greeley, Colorado died peacefully on June 3, 2021, after a prolonged illness. He was born on July 29, 1936 in Little Rock, Arkansas, son of the late Ruth Morris and Edmond James Sullivan of New Orleans, Louisiana. He graduated from Bolton High School in 1954. During high school, he earned the Eagle Scout award. He then attended Tulane University for his undergraduate degree in New Orleans, and then to Louisiana State University Medical School where he graduated in 1961. A residency in Urology at Oschner Clinic in New Orleans followed and in 1963, he met and married the great love of his life, Dorothy Jane Chapman. They had three daughters, Cathy, Gayla, and Betsy.

After serving in the Vietnam War from 1967-1968 as a physician in Vung Tau, he returned to Denver and taught at the University of Colorado Medical School in 1968. He and his family then moved to Greeley where Pat had several careers throughout his lifetime. He was a urologist at the Urology Clinic of Greeley with Dr. Bernie Wolach. He served as State Representative, District 50 in the Colorado House from 1991-1996, with special interest in education and health. He was the owner and manager of the Rocky Mountain Prostate Company.

Pat was involved in the Greeley community as a member of Rotary Club and past member and president of District Six School Board. He loved to travel, read, run marathons, play bridge, swim, spend time with his family, and be active outdoors. He looked forward to the Run Down Cancer every year. Highlights were running the Boston Marathon, running by the Nile River in Egypt, and running 50 miles on his 50th birthday with Bob Cash. Pat was also very involved as a guide and member of the Speakers Bureau for the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ. He had a strong interest in the South West and the American Indians. Service to others was important to Pat throughout his life. He enjoyed classical music and had the opportunity to serve as a guest conductor for the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra. In his earlier years, he found great joy hiking the mountains of Colorado, Mexico and South America and later reminiscing about his adventures with his Boys In the Boots friends: Bill Shade, Glenn Hewitt, and Dick Maxfield. Pat embraced all that life had to offer, and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and their three daughters, Mary Cathleen Sullivan of Loveland, CO, Gayla Anne Sullivan (Rick) of Estes Park, CO, and Elizabeth Colleen Sullivan of Windsor, CO; and his grandchildren Caitlin Moore Sullivan, Daniel Ryan Sullivan, Chloe Ruth Burnstein, his brother Daniel Edmond Sullivan and sister, Colleen Sullivan Ingraffia both of New Orleans; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

My favorite memory of my Uncle Pat was while I was taking a semester off of collage driving around the US in a 1979 Westfalia VW van . At the time Pat was serving in the Colorado state senate and working on a bill that would improve the lives of many people. My friend George and I drove to the state capital building and parked our old VW bus right in front . Uncle Pat met us with a smile on his face and commented ‘ nice van’ . He took us to meet the Governor and we got to be there for the signing of his bill . I always loved Pat’s smile and sense of humor . He was an inspiration in life and I will miss him.

Dr. Sullivan saved my life!

I was only 11 and completely horse crazy. I was too young to understand mortality and danger and I rode a horse with too few miles. I ended up on the ground. Hard. Splitting my kidney in two and spending eleven days in intensive care. Dr. Sullivan was my hero and savior. He guided us through some really tough times and here I am now and still, thankfully, have the gift to be a horse crazy 58-year old.

I only shared a short period with Dr. Sullivan and am so impressed to learn of the impact he had on people well beyond the practice of medicine.

Love and gratitude to his family.
