

Phil was born at Weld County General Hospital on July 28th, 1943. Although he was raised in Greeley, Phil spent considerable time with his father in the Fairbanks Alaska area, learning how to hunt, fish, and trap.
Upon graduating from Greeley High School in 1962, Phil joined the Marine Corps, where he served in Vietnam, earning the rank of Sergeant, and graduating from both the U.S. Army Airborne School, and Marine Corps Drill Instructor School.
After his discharge from the military, Phil attended the University of Northern Colorado. While completing a Master's Degree in Art Education, he met his wife Patsy Erickson. Shortly thereafter, Phil was hired by the Weld RE-4 School District as a high school art teacher, and taught at Windsor High School for the next forty plus years.
Being an outdoorsman, Phil enjoyed hunting, fly fishing, and horsemanship. He was a member of the Ignitors Car Club of Greeley, Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 245 in Greeley, and was nominated for numerous awards including Order Of The Arrow and Wood Badge Leadership Course. Phil was also an active participant in the life of The Greeley Stampede where he served in many capacities, including Stampede Committee Member and Safety and Security Commissioner for many years.
Phil is preceded in death by his father Olin L. and mother Aletta P. Shaffer, and son Tyson A. Shaffer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patsy Shaffer (Greeley), and sons Devon Shaffer and wife Tamara (Fort Collins) and Aaron Shaffer and wife Kayti (Greeley).
A service to celebrate Phil's life and legacy will be held on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021, at 3:30pm, in the Sanctuary at Christ Community Church, 1301 15th Street, Greeley. Military honors will be included as a part of this service. Memorial gifts in Phil's name may be made to the Boy Scouts of America at 2215
