Richard “Dick” Laverty, beloved father, grandfather, teacher and coach, 79 of Greeley, Colorado passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Dick was born in Los Angeles, California on July 24, 1942, to Mildred Irene Trowbridge and Schuyler Casselman Laverty. He attended Los Angeles City College and California State University, Los Angeles where he received a Masters in Elementary Education.
Dick married his high school sweetheart, Ellen Mae Ingham, July 7, 1961. After a brief time pitching semi-professionally for the Fresno Giants, Dick returned to school, working nights for Ralph's Grocery Store Warehouse while completing his education and earning his teaching credential. He began his career teaching in El Monte, California, moving to Greeley in 1976 where he taught at John Evans Junior High, Greeley Central High School, and Northridge High School. Teaching was his vocation; he always considered himself a teacher before a coach. But his coaching career was long and varied, beginning when he was 11 years old coaching younger basketball players in Ventura, California. His coaching career would continue for over 60 years, coaching athletes of many ages across most sports. (Greeley Tribune, Humble, genuine Dick Laverty has spanned eras, influenced many during 64 years of coaching)
Dick was dedicated to his career as an educator, but his greatest love and accomplishment was his family. Dick is remembered by his wife Ellen, his children, Teena Vanderhom (Don), Ginger LaFond (Greg), Shannon Enright (Kris), Richard Laverty (Kathleen), and John Laverty (Ellen) and his brother Terry Laverty. He was a fun and supportive grandfather to Rebekah, Kathryn, Jeffrey, Mary, Veronica, Marcus, Alex, Raechel, Donnie, Madison, Jacob, Sarah, Hannah, Eli, Erin, Bayley, Kegan, Rhys, Amik, Aislin, Noah, Ronan, Liam, Fionnula, Alison, Ande, Kyle, Carrick, Bren, Cole, and 19 great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held on February 25, 2022.
