Robert “Bob” Franklin Scantland, 89, of Greeley, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Garden Square at Westlake. Robert was born on July 21, 1924 in Uniontown, Kentucky to William Creth and Annie Mae (Sights) Scantland.
Robert received his elementary and high school education in the Henderson County school system in Robards, Kentucky.
Robert grew up in coal mining and river work, building dams around the Ohio River.
Robert entered the United States Army in 1943, receiving his basic training at the Medical Unit in Louisville, Kentucky and receiving his field training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Robert served four and a half years in the 123rd-128th Evacuation hospitals in England, Normandy, transferring to the 9th Medical Battalion, 9th Infantry Division in Belgium and Germany. Robert also served in the Colorado National Guard for nine years in the 157th Infantry Regiment, 194 Second Field Artillery Battalion and 140th Signal Battalion as a Radio Relay operator during the Berlin Crisis.
Robert moved to Denver, Colorado in 1947 and worked for Armour and Co. for a time. Robert married Leona Frances Barta in Denver on November 25, 1948. They moved from Denver to the Poudre Canyon, where Robert was employed by the Colorado Game and Fish Department until 1952, moving to Greeley, where he was employed by the Colorado Highway Department for 30 years. He retired in 1980.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was affiliated with P.E.R.A., C.A.P.E., the Greeley Senior Center, St. Peter’s Retired Men and the VFW. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved all wildlife and travelling to Blackhawk.
Robert is survived by his wife, Leona; three daughters, Barb Burke of Mesa, Arizona, Mary Moore (Gary) of Bird City, Kansas and Sharon Shaw of Longmont; son, Robert Scantland of Ault; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother, a granddaughter and a grandson.
Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Stoddard Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens.
