Shirley was born in Toledo, Ohio to E. Ray Williams and Lola (Wolfe) Williams and was their only child. Her mother died from tuberculosis when Shirley was only five. Her father and grandparents raised her in a loving home until she graduated from high school and eventually married. She was particularly close to her cousin Mary Jane (Wolfe) Williams, who was like a sister to her. Shirley graduated from Scott High School in Toledo, Ohio. Shortly after graduation she married Robert R. Smith in June, 1950 and stayed living in Toledo. For a time they lived near what is now Fort Polk, Louisiana while Bob was in the Army.
Shirley and Bob had four boys and raised them while they lived in Louisiana, a few cities in Michigan, Toledo, and eventually Colorado. They relocated to Greeley, Colorado in 1976 where they later divorced. Shirley found the second love of her life, Robert E. Stockhouse and the two were married in October, 1992. Together they enjoyed a wonderful 24 years filled with traveling, movies, local dinner theater, and time spent with their family before her husband, Bob Stockhouse, passed away in June 2016. Shirley held several jobs throughout her life including being a school bus driver, catalog operator, and restaurant hostess. She treasured being a homemaker, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her favorite topics of conversation revolved around what was going on in the lives of her family and retelling the stories to her extended family and friends.
Shirley loved large breed dogs, the mountains, covered bridges and a good cup of coffee.
Shirley is survived by her four sons and their wives: Mark (Stephanie), Mike (Renee), Tom (Sherry), and Paul (Dianne). She also has a step-son Robert (Diane) Stockhouse and step-daughter Judy (Mike) Orrell. She is survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
