Thomas was born on November 8, 1927 in Flint, Michigan to Antone and Julia (Sweeney) Courant. His family then moved to Saugus, Massachusetts.
Thomas graduated from Saugus High School in 1945. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in engineering. He went on to attend Purdue University and MIT, earning a Master's Degree in mathematical engineering. He later returned as a math professor to West Point, where he created the advanced calculus program. He served in the U.S. Army for 30 years, rising to the rank of a full Colonel. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He became involved in the investment world upon his retirement.
On June 7, 1952 he married Evelyn Swanson. They raised two daughters, Diane and Mary, and spent the next 36 years together. That marriage later ended, and he married Barbara (Henderson) Courant.
Like most people of his generation, he was shaped by having gone through the Great Depression. He was grateful for even the smallest things that others may take for granted. His dynamic, fun and loving personality leant itself to many close relationships with family and friends. In addition to being a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Tom was active in the Catholic Church and the West Point Alumni Association. He volunteered at the Broomfield Veterans Center and several soup kitchens in the metro Denver area. He enjoyed running, reading historical biographies and conversations with friends. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan and was attuned to current events, both near and far.
Being a soldier was very important to Thomas, but he was most proud of being a dad, grandpa and great grand papa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Antone and Julia (Sweeney) Courant; his sister, Sr. Mary Courant; the mother of his children, Evelyn (Swanson) Courant; his spouse, Barbara (Henderson) Courant.
He is survived by his daughters, Diane Schulz (Douglas) and Mary Billings; two grandsons, Tyler Norwood (Allie) and Greg Schulz; and one great-grandson, Madden.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, September 20, 2024 at 9:30 am at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 915 12th Street, Greeley, CO. He will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Greeley.
