He was born August 26, 1939 in Webster City, Iowa to Walter Woodrow and Vivian Cecil (Hendrickson) Knickerbocker.
Woody grew up in Williams, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1957. Inducted into the army in 1962, he served in Germany and stateside, was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged March 1964.
Woody married Marilyn Jean Elsbury at the First Congregational Church, in Hampton, Iowa on July 11, 1964. They moved to Greeley in 1965 where Woody began his long career in the local auto parts community. Woody worked for several prominent auto parts stores and dealerships in the area including Greeley Auto Supply, Hillside Auto, Garnsey and Wheeler Ford, Spradley Ford and Ehrlich Motors. He retired from Greeley Nissan in 2017.
Everybody who met Woody knew of his love of the Chicago Cubs. A fan from the age of 6 and a member of the Diehard Chicago Cubs Fan Club, one of the great joys of life was when the Cubs, FINALLY, won the World Series in 2016. Woody enjoyed bowling and reading, especially westerns and history. He was a past member of Greeley Elks No. 809 and Greeley/Evans Moose Lodge No. 909.
Woody also enjoyed time with his cat, “Eddie,” who was a great comfort to him these final months. Above all was the love he had for his family and the time they spent together.
He is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 54 years; daughter and son-in-law, Beth Knickerbocker and Dale Carson of Alexandria, Virginia; son Lance Knickerbocker of Greeley; special aunt, Iris Anderson of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and a cousin, Rosemary Kellogg Towry of Van Nuys, California.
A Celebration of Life And Sharing of Memories will be held from 6:00-8:00 pm Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Stoddard Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Weld County Humane Society, in care of Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 W 28th Street, Greeley, Colorado 80634.
