Alice (Day) Applegate passed away peacefully on September 27, 2026, in Fort Myers, Florida, her home for over a quarter century. She was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on November 18, 1937, the daughter of the Rev. Wilbur V. Day (DePauw Class of 1925) and Mary Lucille (Britton) Day. After graduating from Anderson High School in Anderson, Indiana, in 1956, Alice earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Social Studies in 1960 and a Master of Arts in Teaching in 1970 from DePauw University, and a Master of Library Science from Indiana University in 1989. She had particularly fond memories of her semester abroad with DePauw classmates and Dr. Bergman in Zell am See, Austria.
Alice taught at the elementary and secondary levels, but what she most wanted was to be a mother and homemaker. She loved being near the water, and helped orchestrate memorable family get-togethers at Lakes Webster and Wawasee in Indiana and at Myrtle Beach. For years she and her husband Chuck traveled Florida with their camper, often inviting family and friends to join them, before settling on the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers, where they shared their home for more than twenty years. She and Chuck were also avid round dancers.
Alice remained proud of her roots in the Day Family Farm in Fillmore, Indiana, a Hoosier Homestead held by her family from 1829 until 1993. She worked hard to preserve the family's history, donating the Vincent H. Day Family Collection to the Indiana Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Chuck" Applegate; her sons, Ken and David Masten; her brother, Dr. Donald E. Day (DePauw Class of 1954); and her nephew, Stephen Day. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Kathryn Masten, and son-in-law, Randy Cain, of Maryland; her sister-in-law, Lois Day, and niece, MaryBeth Day, of Pennsylvania; and her nephew, Brian Day, of Connecticut.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 25, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, Indiana, where she will rest beside her parents and her sons.
