Allan Keith Cummings, affectionately known as “Pete,” passed away peacefully at his home near Greencastle on Saturday, October 18th, at the age of 76, after a courageous battle with cancer with his devoted wife of 50 years, Pamela Sue by his side.
Born on August 11, 1949, Allan was the fourth child of Clarence Cleon and Rosetta Alice Cummings. As a young boy, he adopted the nickname “Pete,” after being inspired by Peter in Bible school – a name that stuck with him throughout his life.
Allan grew up in the countryside near Belle Union, where he developed a lifelong passion for farming and raising animals, especially donkeys and ponies. A graduate of Fillmore High School in 1967, Allan married his beloved Pamela Sue Ellis on April 20th, 1975. Together, they raised two sons, Paul Allan (Dana) Cummings of Franklin, and Christopher Dale (Alexis) Cummings of Carmel. Allan was a dedicated and loving father, teaching his sons the values of hard work, patience, kindness, and the joy of a well-told, inappropriate joke.
As a young man, he honorably served his country in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg during the Vietnam War. Allan’s career spanned 27 years at Central Soya in Indianapolis, followed by 15 years at DePauw University before his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with Pamela at auctions and flea markets, where he made many lasting friendships.
Allan’s legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren, Paul Allan (P.J.), Owen Starr, Susan Indiana, Ruby Rose, Hazel Myla, Lovie Lou, Wrenna Jane, Magdalyn Dale, Aro Starr, and Ace Charles. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Flossie Joan, Mary Edna, and Michael Cleon.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Allan’s life and honor his memory on Friday, October 24th at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greencastle. Visitation will begin at 11 AM, followed by funeral services at 1 PM. Allan will be laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.
