Danise Swaim Baird, 77, of Greencastle, Indiana, whose life was defined by compassion, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family and community, passed away on March 1, 2026, at Hendricks County Hospital in Danville, Indiana.
Born in Vermilion County, Indiana, to Gilbert and Joan Swaim, Danise was raised in Parke County and graduated from Turkey Run High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Purdue University and began what would become a 57-year calling in service to others.
Nearly 60 years ago, she married the love of her life, James R. Baird. Their marriage, which would have reached 60 years this summer, was a partnership defined by loyalty, faith, and quiet strength. To her husband, she was simply “Angel,” a name that reflected both how he saw her and how she lived.
Danise was a nurse from the moment she graduated, but more than that, she was a protector and an advocate. In 1981, she stepped forward to help expand access to care for families who needed it most, particularly in rural communities like her own. She believed deeply that where a person lives should never determine the quality of care they receive. Her life’s work reflected compassion, paired with determination.
But her greatest legacy is her family.
Danise loved fiercely and without hesitation. She loved whatever her children loved. She learned to love cattle alongside one son, and horses were never difficult for her to love, as they had been part of her life since childhood. As a young girl, she once rode her pony to school and would only agree to come home if her father brought the pony for her to ride back.
Her purpose was unwavering: to make life better for her family and to help each of them become the strongest and best version of themselves.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Congressman James R. Baird; her children, Vanessa, Stacey (Sherri), and Beau; and her beloved grandchildren, Riley and Brooklyn.
In recent days, countless friends have spoken of her kindness, encouragement, and steady presence. What made Danise strong was her fierce determination to protect those she loved. What made her extraordinary was the gentleness with which she did it.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Goben United Methodist Church with Pastor Matt Barnes officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later time. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2026, at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has established the Danise Baird “Angel” Endowment to support efforts that strengthen rural healthcare and build healthier communities like the one she loved.
And while her hands are now at rest, the work of her life continues in the family she shaped, the patients she cared for, the fields she walked, and the quiet strength she instilled in those she loved. The measure of her life is not only in the years she lived, but in the generations who will stand taller because she stood beside them. To her husband she was always “Angel” and in the hearts of those who loved her she will always be.
