Eileen Harmless DePlanty Shinn
August 6, 1922 – June 26, 2013
Eileen Harmless Shinn, 90, of Greencastle passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013.
She was born on August 6, 1922 in Parke County to Frederick DePlanty and Mallie Martin DePlanty.
Eileen was a 1939 graduate of Rockville High School. She was the previous owner of Branson Insurance Agency in Rockville before retiring. Mrs. Shinn was a member of First Christian Church, where she was active in the Christian Women Fellowship (CWF) group. She was also an active member in the Business Professional Women (BPW) Organization, Putnam County Historical Association; ladies of the VFW, Elks, and Moose organizations and was an honorary member of the Army 5th Division.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Dorothy Matthews and Helen Akers; a brother, Dale DePlanty; her husbands, Harris Harmless and Charles Leon Shinn; and a great-granddaughter, Megan Wade.
Surviving are two sons, Melvin Harmless and wife Olive of Catlin, and Malcolm Harmless of Greencastle; one daughter Roseanna Spencer of Nashville; a sister, Florence Porter of Veedersburg; four grandchildren, Randy Harmless and wife Brenda of Clayton, NC, Kim Wade of Terre Haute, Shanti Neice and husband Tony of Terre Haute and Jason Spencer and wife Amanda of Morgantown; five great-grandchildren, Andrew Harmless, Adam Harmless, Jacob Wade, Damien Ball and Jordan Weaver; two step-daughters, Sherry Aker and husband Terry of Rushville and Beverly Brown and husband Gib of Hereford, AZ; five step-grandchildren, Stephanie Owen and husband Michael of Rushville, Stacie Padgett and husband Robert of Rushville, Timothy “T.J.” Aker and wife Heather of Rushville, Robert Frazier and wife Jill of Seymour, and James Frazier of Plainfield; 15 step-great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 1, 2013 at 11 A.M. at Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Paul Champion officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Garden Cemetery in Rockville. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 30, 2013 from 2 P.M. until 6 P.M. at the funeral home.
Memorials in Mrs. Shinn’s memory may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
