Jim was born on February 6, 1945, in the family home in Portland Mills, Indiana, to Manford “Bus” and Bessie (Berry) Davies. He was the middle of seven children and grew up surrounded by family and farm life that shaped his strong work ethic and love of the land. His siblings William, Dale, Don, and Marjorie preceded him in death. He is survived by his brothers Edwin of Russellville and Larry (Connie) of York, PA.
Jim graduated from Turkey Run High School in 1963. In 1964, he married Linda Tillotson, and together they built a life centered around family and hard work while raising their two daughters, Mary (Larry Mosteller) and AmyLynn (Rodney Byrd). Linda and Mary, both preceded him in death. His granddaughters, Alisha and Lauren, were a great source of pride and joy and will miss him dearly.
Growing up on the family farm, Jim participated in 4-H and FFA, where he developed a lifelong knowledge of livestock and animal husbandry. His passion for the cattle industry took him to ranches in Indiana, Connecticut, and Illinois, often with his family by his side. In 1977, Jim traveled to Argentina for a temporary ranch position, an experience that reflected both his adventurous spirit and dedication to his work.
In 1980, Jim and Linda returned to Indiana and purchased the Walker Motel property (later Walker Apartments), where they spent many years as business owners. They also operated New Maid, Inc., a cleaning company that served the community. Jim later worked at Heartland Automotive for thirteen years before retiring in 2005.
Jim was married to J. Maureen Gwin from 1995 to 2000.
In 2004, he married Teresa Magill, who survives. Teresa, along with her sons Charlie Ray and JD, eleven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren, will miss Jim’s presence, and steady nature in their lives. Grandson Drew preceded him in death.
Jim will be remembered for his strong work ethic, love of family, and the many years he spent working with cattle and building businesses. Those who knew him knew a man who valued hard work, loyalty, and the simple joys of life.
