

John was born in Greencastle on July 24, 1933, the son of Charles V. and Zella (Crabbe) Bergen, and was a 1952 graduate of Greencastle High School. He also attended Butler University.
Mr. Bergen attended Greencastle Christian Church and was a former member of Greencastle Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Kiwanis, Wally Byam Airstream Club for 25 years, where he served as an International Officer, and was a Mason for 50 years. John was a retired Postmaster of the United States Postal Office in Greencastle. He was one of two people tasked to assign postal codes to the entire State of Indiana.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Barbara (Zachary) Bergen; three children, Michael Bergen, (DeeDee), Theresa Wade, (Tom), and Polly Shuee, (Bill); five grandchildren, Graham Shuee, (Erin), Mac Shuee, (Kayt), Erin Bergen, Chloe Bergen, and Leah Diaz, (Justin); six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rhea Myers and Mary Mattingly; and a brother, Charles M. Bergen.
