I am concerned that my original condolence was not recorded, and so I am recording another. I regret that I will be unable to attend services for your father and loved one as I am some distance away. So I want to leave you with some special thoughts.

First, your father was a special friend and colleague to my husband, Jim. He had the utmost respect for him and an irony would occur when it was shortly after a visit to the rehab center at Terre Haute that we would learn of Jim's illness.

John had a meaningful role in my live as well, as colleague and wife in the chemistry wife's club. Your mother gave a baby shower for me, as well as a retirement reception.

I can still see your mother and father gliding around the dance floor, and feel the trepidation that I had when as winter term activities director who scheduled a faculty dance in the winter of I believe 1987 only to have the student band insist upon playing "their" music. Was I ever relieved to find a BIG snow storm resulted in cancellation of the event. Also, your parents hosted many faculty parties and
I recall the amazed look on their faces when Jim and I showed up on a Saturday night and their usual Saturday party had been held on a Friday that year.

I recall your father's service to the rural churches and the leadership that he provided to the chemistry department and the university. He was all about service and his personality reflected intelligence, warmth, and a special way.

You, as the family, were devoted to your parents. They will be and are missed but they leave you to exemplify
their mission.

In sympathy,
Mrs Jim (Judy) George

I was deeply saddened to read about your father's passing, Phillip. I remember him from my days as a student at DePauw. He was very quiet and soft spoken.
