Obituary of Margie Lou App
Margie Lou App, 79, of Greencastle, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2022. Born May 29, 1942 in St. Bernard, Ohio, the daughter of Silas Edward and Dora (Bell) Russell. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe App; sons Kevin Powers and Nick App; and sisters, Barbara Surface and Iva Delph. Margie is survived by her children, Jeff Powers & wife Julie and DeLinda “DeeDee” Arbuckle & husband Chris; step children, Bill App & wife Vicki and Teresa McPeak; a brother, Jimmy Russell & wife Teresa; four grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. A few months ago Grandma asked me if I’d write her obituary. I laughed and we carried on with our visit. Now here I am today, trying to sum up her life and honor her in a short sweet paragraph. Margie Lou Russell App. A working woman with a house full of kids out in the country. She devoted her time to owning and running a tavern, the Bainbridge Tap, where she spent days, nights, and holidays serving local patrons, in order to provide for her family at home. Grandma’s life was derailed when she would have to lay two of her children to rest. Nick App (Nicky), and eventually Kevin Powers as well. No parent should ever have to bury their own children. She somehow managed to keep pushing. Later on in her life she became a cook and a “house mom” to all the boys of the DePauw “Delta Tau Delta” fraternity house. She became a member of the Mormon Church where she met lots of friends who in her eyes were family. She took care of everyone she could, while expecting nothing in return. I might be biased but I’d say my grandma was the best one ever. She loved her grandkids and great grandkids and never missed out on an opportunity to squeeze and kiss them. She was the “holiday glue”, the person who brought us all together to celebrate Christmases and Thanksgivings year after year. The best way to honor such a person like Margie, is to spend all the time you can with your close friends and family, and always tell your kids how much you love them. She was a smiling face even during the most challenging times of her life, and she always made the hard days look easy. My grandma was a beautiful saint of a woman, a country girl at heart, and a servant of all who needed her. She will be deeply missed, forever. With love grandma, Josie Terry. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at the Bainbridge Cemetery. Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. The family wishes to extend a Special Thank You to the staff at Asbury Towers, Life’s Journey Hospice Care and Mom’s hospice care nurse Brooke Rippy. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the App family.
