January 5, 1952April 21, 2021

Michael R. Moore, 69 of Greencastle lost a valiant and fierce battle with cancer, his end-of-watch occurring on April 21, 2021.

Mike was born on January 5, 1952, the son of Richard and Dorothy (Sheffler) Moore, and was a graduate of Southport High School. He also attended Indiana University.

Mike served the DePauw Community 15 years from 2005 until his retirement in June of 2020. He served the Indiana law enforcement community 46 years. He began his career in 1973 with the Indiana University Police Department serving until 1978 when he joined the Indianapolis Airport Authority. Mike soon joined the Speedway, Indiana Police Department in 1979 retiring with the rank of Lieutenant in 2005.

Officer Moore was a valued addition to our DePauw family bringing with him many years of experience and leadership in 2005. He served as the department's firearms instructor and armorer, as well as helped implement the Officer's Bicycle Patrol program. His expertise helped launch new means of outreach within the University community.

Mike will best be remembered for his intense professionalism and the consistent kindness shown to everyone he had opportunity to serve and assist, including all fur friends. There was no greater advocate for our campus cats than Officer Moore. Truly a man of great wisdom who mentored many, the gentlest soul, and the guy you always wanted at your side no matter the circumstances.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Vickie Moore.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Cats Haven, 2603 N. College Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana 46205.

I didn't know him personally, but I always heard many good things about him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. A man who cares for cats is a very special person.

Mike started at Speedway shortly after me. He, Jeff Dine, and Rick Phillips were the IU band of brothers, all coming from IU Police. My favorite story and one we laughed at a lot, was the night Mike was dry firing his "unloaded" weapon at the TV set in Bloomington. Problem was, it really was loaded. Mike took a lot of ribbing about killing the TV set. On just a more personal level, Mike was just a really good guy. Always calm, always professional, but was also a lot of fun after a couple of beers. He will be missed. My condolences to the family.
