Born November 22, 1950, in Lexington, Kentucky. He graduated from Honey Creek High School in 1969 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University. After college, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany for three years.
Steve was a patriot, a lifelong learner, and dedicated to public service. He was a licensed pilot, certified SCUBA diver, and volunteer firefighter. As a Red Cross volunteer, he deployed to over 40 disaster sites nationwide. He was also a member of the American Legion and served as an Honor Guard volunteer, providing military funeral honors to fellow veterans. A founding member of the Putnam County Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.), Steve gave generously of his time and skills to support his community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett Ernest and Mary Helen (Eads) Shotwell and his brothers, Mike and Barry Shotwell.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Newton; his brother, John Shotwell; his sisters, Teresa Mitchell and Susanne Duff; his son, Nicholas Shotwell and his wife Melissa; his daughter, Stephanie Cooper and her husband Jeremy; and family members, Chad Beadles and his wife Kimberly, Bill Newton and his wife Rachel; his grandchildren, Savannah, Luke, Tucker, Ryder,
Jacob, Aiden, Liam, Jude, and Beau; his nieces and nephews, Ashley, Megan, Drew, Jason, Melissa, Joshua, Seth, Matthew, Jared, and Lily.
A memorial visitation will be held from 11-1pm on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home in Greencastle with a memorial service to follow at 1pm. The burial service will be at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Evansville at 1pm on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
